As Professor of Design at the University of Louisville's Hite Art Institute, I act as head of the graphic design BFA program and teach courses in typography, type design, visual identity, fundamental visual semiotics, and graphic design history. I live in the woods on the outskirts of "the Ville" with artist and writer Laurie Doctor. Research interests include graphic design theory, calligraphy, aesthetics and semiotics - especially semiotics derived from the work of Charles Sanders Peirce. My book, FireSigns (MIT Press 2017), uses Peircean semiotics to contribute theoretical underpinnings for visual communication.

I also have interests in poetry and music. Poems From Elsewhere was published in 2006 and a collaborative project, Six Voices, in 2017. The fact that I used to play bowed psaltry and tenor recorder in early music consorts hasn't dampened my enthusiasm for the music of the Grateful Dead.

My typeface Rieven Uncial ( was awarded a Certificate of Typographic Excellence in 2010 from the Type Directors Club of New York. It's now available with extended sorts and ornaments from Delve Fonts or other sellers. Maxular Rx is the first font specifically designed for people with macular degeneration.
